Objective(s): The researcher and his team wil excavate early Inuit village sites (AD 1000-present) at Kuyait and Kamaiyuk. Surveys will be completed for European and Inuit historic and prehistoric sites in outer Frobisher Bay and Cyrus Field Bay, as well as surveys of Frobisher sites and mines off Kodlunarn Island. They will also engage in environmental and climatic research.

Project Description: The 1992 season will continue excavations at historic period Inuit sites occupied at the time of the Frobisher voyages and later, to determine the amount and kinds of contacts made with the Frobisher group and its impact on Inuit culture change. Studies will also be made of prehistory Inuit sites of the Pre-Dorset and Dorset cultures. Studies will determine the impact of coastal subsidence that is rapidly eroding Inuit and early European sites in the area.
