Objective(s): To determine the magnitude and nature of frost heave; to continue investigations on the hydrology of frost heave; to document the near-surface ice content of permafrost at various sites; to determine the cryostratigraphic characteristics of the early Holocene thaw unconformity in the Delta; to determine conditions causing the formation of shoals in Delta lakes; to investigate the flow of water between channels and lakes of the Delta in winter.

Project Description: The researcher will continue to collect samples of ground ice and measure temperatures in lakes and ponds. This information is used to help understand how the ground heaves as it freezes in winter, and to determine the extent of soil settlement during thaw in summer. The information about lakes is used to help understand the relations between water depths and temperatures beneath the lake.
