Objective(s): To determine the level of some organochlorines and heavy metals in northern neonates (newborns) from the Mackenzie and Kitikmeot Regions who are delivered at Stanton Yellowknife Hospital, over a one-year span; to establish a baseline to evaluate trends over time and regions; and to contribute to national and AMAP (Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program) databases.

Project Description: This activity will help expand the human health baseline on exposure and effects of environmental contaminants on humans in the NWT. Blood will be sampled from participating mothers and from the umbilical cord to determine the levels of specific organochlorines and heavy metals. This activity will involve the participation of communities and community health workers in all aspects including design, implementation and reporting of results.
