Objective(s): The objectives of this work are to determine the nature of the relationship between the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and its employees between the years 1965-1984. Among the issues to be examined are: determining the nature and effectiveness of the employees' organizations; and establishing any "uniquely northern" aspects of the public sector labour movement in the NWT during this time. This work is important because northern labour history is in its infancy and to date the only academic work published about it has come from the United States. It is expected that the bulk of documents required in this study will be located in the archival collections of the Union of Northern Workers in Yellowknife.

Project Description: The objectives of this work are to determine the nature of the relationship between the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and its employees between the years 1965-1984. Data collection will take place mainly in the Union of Northern Workers collection at the NWT archives, particularly for the period 1967-84 to examine to relationship between the state and its employees, particularly in the absence of party politics. The fundamental question to be addressed is "Does organized labour take on an increased oppositional role in the absence of an organized parliamentary opposition"?
