Objective(s): Since the summer of 2001, the Gwich'in Social and Cultural Institute has undertaken a research project aimed at examining the question of how the Gwich'in define heritage and how they wish to preserve and foster an appreciation of their heritage in a way that reflects their own worldview. More particularly, this project focuses on the question of heritage resources. Heritage resources represent a very important aspect of Gwich'in culture and the Gwich'in land claim recognizes them as co-managers of their heritage resources in the Northwest Territories and owners and managers of these resources in the Yukon. However, based on research carried out by the GSCI since 1993, it has become clear that the definition of heritage resources needs to be re-examined and that the values and principles underlying Gwich'in heritage and heritage management need to be clarified. These are the issues that will be addressed during this study.
