Objective(s): The purpose of this study is to collect river waters to determine the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, and nutrients, including nitrate, phosphate and silicate, and to examine their temporary variations related to climate and environmental changes. Being heavily influenced by snow, ice and permafrost, the northern ecosystem is quite sensitive to climate changes. However, the biogeochemical consequences of recent climate and environmental changes are largely unknown. We will compare the quantity and quality of organic carbon species and nutrients between the Yukon River and Mackenzie River Basins to evaluate the water chemistry and biogeochemical tracer variations and their relationship with hydrological and environmental changes. The Mackenzie River will be sampled bimonthly during the summer using a water pump and filtration system. About 40 L to 60 L of water will be collected each sampling trip.
