Project Description: The purpose of this study is to collect biological information from both the control sites and the treatment sites within Matthews Lake and the surrounding area. The objective is to monitor these sites and collect enough information to evaluate the effectiveness of the 2004 habitat enhancement and construction activities.

Field crews will fly to Matthews Lake, landing either on the runway or the lake. The Treeline Lodge, where the research team will be based, has vehicles that will be used to transport equipment and personnel to monitoring stations. Fish will be collected using gill nets, seine nets, angling, minnow traps, electrofishing, and dip nets. Visual observations of fish will be gathered using snorkeling surveys, streambank walks, and spawning surveys. All fish will be weighed, measured, and checked for health. Fish will be returned to the environment unharmed.

Public consultation will take place with interested parties. A report will be written and submitted to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The study will be conducted at Matthews Lake, near the Tundra/Salmita Mine. The research will be conducted from June 25 to September 15, 2005, with monitoring to take place in June and August.
