Objective(s): To develop a clear definition and description of spirituality as understood by the Sahtuot’ine of Deline.

Project Description: The purpose of the thesis is to develop a clear definition and description of spirituality as understood by the Sahtuot’ine of Deline. The Principal Investigator (PI) intends to distinguish spirituality (yedii), worldview (Dene K’e Ka?edeni?a) and medicine power (?ik’o).

The PI will rely primarily on stories told by elders over many years, recordings from the Deline community archive, and personal knowledge. The PI will also do a literature review focusing on resources that emphasize spirituality and medicine power. This will be done using the post-colonial indigenous research approach using the qualitative method.

The PI is a Sahtuot'ine and a member of the community of Deline where this research will occur. She will be working with elders and the community, and the recordings resulting from this research will be archived in the community. This research is designed to benefit the community through its language and traditional knowledge. Results and products of this research can be used for educational purposes in the community.

The Principal Investigator will do a presentation to the community of Deline, and make the thesis available to the community. The recordings from this research will be archived in Deline. Some of the results and products of this research might be used to develop educational materials relating to Sahtuot'ine language and culture.

The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 9, 2014 to December 31, 2014.
