Project Description: There are three objectives for the evaluation of historic sumps during this project. The first objective is to field verify the "Protocol for the Assessment of Drilling Mud Sumps” for evaluating historic sump site locations. The second objective is to identify, inventory, and assess the environmental conditions at the historic sump sites, and the third objective is to compile consistent data on these sump sites in a common database for future review and use.

All sites will be accessed by helicopter. Field assessments will consist of visual investigations, active layer (surface) soil sampling, water sampling, and electromagnetic surveys.

A report on the project will be submitted to the Aurora Research Institute. The data will also be communicated during consultations with interested communities. Once the site assessment work is initiated, local wildlife monitors will be hired.
The study will be conducted at the Muskox D-37 and the Parker River J-72 sump sites on Banks Island. The researchers will access the sump sites from Sachs Habour. The research will be conducted from July 1 to August 31, 2005.
